Preface

Since my early childhood, I had had an abiding interest in the game of cricket. I owe it primarily to my father, who used to narrate stories about the game since when I was virtually in my kindergarten years. My academic commitment in school, college and university stood in my way for any serious participation in the game, but the interest was alive and bubbling all along. I followed the game with keen interest, listened to the radio and thereafter, television commentary, and avidly read magazines and books on cricket whenever I could.

The game of cricket, by virtue of its very ambivalent nature, generates interesting statistical figures. Curious incidents, turns of fortune and amusing anecdotes take place, particularly in the longer version of the game played over a period of 4 or 5 days. Records tumble, new statistical figures are created and incidents of historical importance are enacted.

Since its inception, cricket has witnessed many vicissitudes, reformations, revisions and tectonic changes over the years. The game, however, goes on, and therefore, it is most likely that some of the facts recorded in this book will be obsolete after some time. It is, therefore, pertinent to mention that all facts and figures mentioned in this book are as of 30 June 2017.

I shall be remiss if I do not mention the contribution of Dr Pradip Kumar Dhole, my good friend for ages, towards compiling this volume. I had long hours of discussion with him regarding the conceptualization and planning of this volume, and his views were of utmost help to me. He offered significant inputs, and advised, modified and rectified a number of issues. Indeed, this book could easily be called his work, as much as mine.

I am indebted to Rupa Publications for kindly agreeing to publish this work of mine.

I shall consider my work well done, and worthwhile, if this book generates interest among readers.

1.Which match was officially recognized as a Test match later?

The inaugural match played between England and Australia at Melbourne on 15 March 1877.

Initially, it was labelled as the match between James Lillywhite’s professional touring team and the Grand Combined Melbourne and Sydney XI.

2. After Test cricket started between England and Australia, who was the third entrant?

South Africa.

England toured the country in 1889.

3. What is the highest run aggregate in a Test match?

It is an aggregate of 1,981 runs. It was scored in the match between England and South Africa at Durban in 1939. This was a timeless Test match which lasted for 10 days. When rain intervened, the match was decided as drawn by mutual agreement, since the English team had to take the train to Cape Town in order to depart for England. Bill Edrich of England was the highest scorer with 219 runs.

4. What is the lowest run scored in a session by a batsman in Test cricket?

It is 8 runs. It was scored by Trevor Bailey against Australia at Brisbane in 1958-59. His final score was 68 runs in 427 balls.

5. Which is the shortest Test match ever played?

Australia versus South Africa, at Melbourne in 1932. It lasted for 5 hours and 53 minutes, and contained 656 balls. South Africa scored 36 and 55, while Australia scored 153 runs in their only innings, and thus won by an innings and 62 runs.

6. Which country has recorded the highest total in their inaugural Test match?

Zimbabwe. They scored 456 against India at Harare in 1992.7. What is the highest innings score in a Test match?

It is a score of 952 for 6. It was scored by Sri Lanka against India at Colombo in 1997, surpassing 903 for 7 by England against Australia at London in 1938. 8. Who is the youngest cricketer to score a century in test cricket?

Mohammad Ashraful of Bangladesh. He scored his century on debut, against Sri Lanka in 2001 at Colombo and made 114 runs at the age of 16 years and 362 days. He thus broke the record held by Mushtaq Mohammad of Pakistan, who, in 1960–1961, scored 101 against India at Feroz Shah Kotla Ground, at 17 years and 78 days of age.
